How much does solar cost for a Scottish farm in 2026?

A typical farm solar PV system in Scotland costs between £8,000 and £25,000 depending on system size and battery storage. Interest-free credit up to £30,000 is available subject to status, and 0% VAT applies on panels and batteries until 31 March 2027.

What size solar system does a farm need?

The size of your system depends on your annual electricity consumption, your roof or land area, and how much of your usage happens during daylight hours. A dairy farm running milking equipment and refrigeration through the day will benefit from a larger array than a farm with mostly overnight loads. During your no-obligation survey, we assess your energy bills, your roof orientation and pitch, and your available land to recommend the right system size.

Common farm system sizes range from 10 kW (roughly 25 panels) for smaller operations to 50 kW or more for larger farms with significant daytime demand. The cost per kW generally decreases as system size increases, so larger systems offer better value per unit of generation.

How much does battery storage add?

Battery storage typically adds £4,000 to £12,000 depending on capacity. For farms with continuous loads — dairies, cold stores, livestock ventilation — battery storage is often the difference between using 30% of your generation and using 80% or more. The 0% VAT rate currently applies to batteries as well as panels, which reduces the installed cost until 31 March 2027.

Battery capacity is sized to match your evening and overnight usage. Your survey includes an assessment of your consumption patterns to recommend the right battery size. See our battery storage guide for more detail.

How does interest-free credit work?

Interest-free credit of up to £30,000 is available, subject to status and affordability. This means you can spread the cost of your system over monthly payments without paying interest, subject to status. Finance terms are confirmed during your quote — there is no obligation to proceed at any stage. See our finance guide for the full picture.

What about 0% VAT?

Solar panels and battery storage currently benefit from 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. This means the installed cost of your system is lower during this period. After March 2027, VAT may return to the standard rate. We will confirm how this applies to your quote during your survey.

Are there hidden costs?

No. Your quote includes the full installed cost — panels, mounting, inverter, battery (if included), scaffolding, installation labour and MCS certification. If your roof needs structural repairs before installation, that is included in the quote too. There are no additional charges after the quote is agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get solar for my farm with no upfront cost?

Yes. Interest-free credit up to £30,000 is available subject to status, which means you can spread the cost over monthly payments with no interest charge. Terms are confirmed during your quote.

Is the quote really no-obligation?

Yes. The survey and quote are completely no-obligation. We assess your buildings and energy use, then provide a tailored quote. There is no pressure to proceed at any stage.

Does the cost include scaffolding and installation?

Yes. Your quote includes the full installed cost — panels, mounting, inverter, battery if included, scaffolding, labour and MCS certification. There are no additional charges after the quote is agreed.

How long does a farm solar system last?

Solar panels typically carry a 25-year performance warranty and last 30+ years. Inverters usually last 10–15 years and may need replacement during the system lifetime. Batteries typically last 10–15 years depending on usage cycles.

Will solar increase my farm property value?

Solar PV can increase property value by reducing ongoing energy costs. The extent depends on system age, condition and whether ownership transfers with the property. Your surveyor can advise on valuation implications.
